Protect Your Skin To Protect Your Health – Modern Skin Care
The notion of getting a tan has certainly changed over the decades. If you ever used a “tanning lotion” you probably recall the little girl on the Coppertone ads with her bottom exposed when her little puppy tugged at her swimsuit bottom. That “tan line” promoted a healthy golden tan which is achieved by using a suntan lotion. Today, that company will never promote getting a tan, nor will any other like them.
You may even remember those reflective things that we stuck under our chins to ensure the sun’s rays get properly bounced up onto the neck. Show me a person who used one of those things and I’ll show you a person with delicate neck skin that’s taken a beating. Many of us used the so-called “suntan lotions” with an SPF of 2 or 4, believing it would block the “harmful” rays that burn the skin while letting the “good” rays in to gently tan our skin to a golden brown.
Our notion of safe tanning has forever changed. We no longer believe that there are safe tanning rays and harmful burning rays. We can’t apply a suntan lotion and sort out the good rays from the bad rays. A low SPF lotion doesn’t protect us while we tan. This idea has fallen by the wayside with studies by groups like the Skin Cancer Foundation. Now we know that sunblocks and sunscreens are meant to protect us from all the sun’s harmful rays.
We now know that we must start each day with the application of a skin protection lotion. Using an SPF of 15 generally means that your skin is protected for 15 times the amount of time than if your skin was bare. Don’t use that calculation too literally. Just know that the higher the number, the greater the time of protection.
Daily application of an SPF 15 product is recommended by most skin care professionals including estheticians and dermatologists. Apply your sunscreen product at least 15 minutes before you go out into the daylight. When headed to the beach or park, apply a good water-resistant sunscreen with a higher SPF, then reapply after about half an hour. Keep reapplying after that every few hours and every time you take a dip in the water or get sweaty.
Skin care product lines now feature many moisturizers that have built in SPF 15 or higher. This makes your morning regimen easier. You’re much less likely to skip applying sun protection when it’s in your routine skin care each morning.
If you wear a foundation, there are many now that offer SPF protection. This is another simple way to provide your skin the protection it needs without adding another step. Along with liquid foundations, many mineral foundations have been developed which offer splendid coverage as well as natural SPF protection.
What have we learned from our little bare bottomed girl in the Coppertone ad? We learned that times change as we learn more about how to take care of our body. Coppertone has removed the “tan line” from the little girl in the modern ads and now promotes sun protection and never suggests anyone should develop a “tan line” of their own.
There is sun damage you can see, like sunburn, and sun damage that is not seen when you expose your skin unprotected to the sun. Protect your skin daily to prevent exposure to these dangers. You can have fun in the sun, go to the park, the beach, the lake – just be smart and protect your delicate skin. Talk to your dermatologist or skin care professional and find out what type of sun protection product is right for your skin. You’re not only protecting your skin from wrinkles and sunburn – you’re protecting your health!
