Because Of Contact Lens, My Eyes Catch a Cold

The temperature was declining all the time and the bad cold has begun to strike people. Recently, I caught a bad cold. At the same time, my eyes turned red, painful, even a little swollen. Well, bad things never come along. The symptoms caused by the cold had been greatly improved by some treatments in time, while the condition of eyes became worse. So I had to go to the doctor’s again for an eye examination.

But the result was absolutely out of my expectation. It was the contact lens that brings about my eyes “catching a cold”, too. I caught the keratitis caused by cold virus. What was the wrong with my contact lens this time? I have worn contact lens for over two years. Though eyes are a little dry sometimes, I have enjoyed all the convenience from a pair of contact lens.

How Can You Tell if a Contact Lens is Inside Out?

Whether you are a new contact lens wearer or you have been using them for years to correct your vision, you may be wondering how can you tell if a contact lens is inside out. If you suspect you may be wearing your contact lenses incorrectly or they just feel uncomfortable, here are some ways you can determine this to avoid the problem in the future.

Look at the Lens

Before placing the lens in your eye, hold it on the tip of your index finger and look at it carefully from the side. Is it shaped like the letter “U” or it is flared on the sides, like a soup bowl? The correct shape of a soft contact lens should be like the letter “U”. If it’s shaped like a soup bowl, then it’s inside out. Some people also recommend the “taco test” whereby you gently squeeze the lens so that the edges touch. If they touch completely, then the lens is right side out. If the edges flare out and don’t touch fully, then it’s inside out. Simply flip the lens around and it will be positioned correctly for wearing.

Contact Lens Cases

Contact lens wearers have always focused on the selection and fitting of their contact lenses.  However, with the exception of perhaps selecting a ‘nifty’ color, less attention is paid by many to the lens case in which their contacts will be stored.  This is an oversight that could lead to serious eye-health problems.

Currently, a large portion of research in the contact lens field centers on preventing and treating infections that result from contaminated lenses.  The condition of contact lens cases must also be considered a factor; especially when a recent study* discovered that nearly one quarter of cases in use are never replaced. This is extremely alarming because when not properly cared for or discarded, these cases become reservoirs for dangerous bacteria that threaten the health of the wearer’s eyes.  The implications are more serious when realizing that an increasing number of children are being fitted for contacts.  If parents are lax in lens care, it is logical to assume that this behavior will be passed onto their kids.
